Shoshana Hurand

A lover of experiential education and creative ideas, Shoshana has always managed to have one foot planted in academia and the other traipsing through bogs and back alleys across the Midwest. Her escapades have included: creating permanent art with Detroit elementary schoolers; serving with AmeriCorps in Elkhart, Indiana; running a black+white darkroom; designing and facilitating adventure education–based diversity workshops for high school students in Flint, Michigan; creating and implementing a peer-facilitated model for the U-M School of Social Work’s Foundation Field Seminar; and serving as the Community Coordinator/Producer/Assistant Director/Set-Mom for a feature film shot in Detroit with the EFEX Project.

Shoshana earned a couple of degrees from the University of Michigan: a BA in Sociology and Global Change, and an MSW concentrating in Community Organizing. She is also the Associate Director of Project Community, a peer-facilitated service-learning program at the Ginsberg Center for Community Service and Learning at U-M.

Shoshana has been involved with the START Project since its inception. Besides trying (often in vain) to keep newspaper, glue, lumber, and paint organized, she focuses primarily on the integration of University and community members into the creation of an expressive, fun-filled experience.
